NEW NUTRIGREEN®

A True Photoperiod Sensitive and Brown Midrib Hybrid Forage Sorghum

NUTRIGREEN® combines the outstanding forage production of a photoperiod sensitive sorghum forage hybrid and the digestibility of a brown midrib forage sorghum hybrid. By combining both of these important characteristics in NUTRIGREEN®, Warner Seeds has developed a multi-use, high tonnage and high quality hybrid sorghum forage product that is well adapted for direct pasture, haying, silage, and hybrid vigor for forage yield. Because the hybrid is completely brown midrib there is a significant increase in digestibility and increased palatability of the stem and leaves over conventional sorghum forages. The increased palatability comes from the texture of the stems, their sweetness and major reduction in lignin content. By combining increases in the sorghum forage traits of palatability, hybrid vigor forage yield, the quality of brown midrib and the photoperiod sensitive response to growth, the overall yield of high quality green material is truly phenomenal in NUTRIGREEN®.

NUTRIGREEN® has a critical photoperiod of approximately 12:20 hrs (sensitive to photoperiod). Planted after April 10 in the United States the hybrid will not reach full bloom until late September or early October. This is approximately 150 – 160 days of growth, i.e. production of a new leaf each 2.75 – 3.2 days. It is possible to produce 45 – 50 leaves during this time frame if temperatures are above 75 – 80 degrees Fahrenheit.

NUTRIGREEN® out-performs conventional sorghum forage hybrids! NUTRIGREEN® has both major quality traits built-in to provide the grower unprecedented Relative Feed Value.

NUTRIGREEN® has medium sized culms with very long wide leaves, excellent standability and both tillering and regrowth capability are very good. Midrib color is brown and juicy, plant color is purple, and mature seed color is brown. Maturity is undeterminable since the hybrid is sensitive to daylength – if planted correctly the hybrid should not flower until daylength is less than 12:20 hrs. Mature plant height should range from 7 – 15 feet depending upon planting dates and cultural practices.

Harvest height should reflect goal or usage. If hybrid is to be used for hay, or green chop it should be harvested at approximately 70-days after planting. If the goal is direct pasture, animals should be placed on the hybrid once the plant height is greater than 36 inches. Silage can be produced with the hybrid at any moment, but data suggest that one-cut harvest near the end of the season is best for tonnage and greatest Relative Feed Value.
